Yakov Grigoryevich Kutsenko (born 20 November 1915) preceded our great heavyweights Medvedev, Vlasov, Zhabotinsky, Alekseyev, Rakhmanov and Gunyashev. He was overall European champion in 1947 and 1950, twice world silver medallist, 14 times USSR champion, and set 57 national records, four of them world records. In 1938 he was the first Soviet lifter over 400 kg in the total. Retiring unbeaten, he became national head coach and Honoured Coach of the USSR, and carried the flag at Helsinki. He wrote four books and holds the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
